Jaguar's first attempt at the 24 hour race. 3 privately entered XK 120's faced the starter's flag, with the redoubtable Lofty England providing a watching brief, and a factory mechanic allocated to each car. This first skirmish was seen as part of a learning exercise, with the thought of a possible works entry to come in the following year.
As it happened, the virtually standard cars measured up pretty well to the outright racers , hampered mainly by their weight and less than perfect brakes.
The Johnson and Hadley car got up to 2nd position by dawn, only to have the clutch fail around midday.
Our subject, the Haines and Clark car, finished 12th at 80.60 mph, having been in 8th place, before being delayed by clutch and brake problems, as mentioned above.
