The replacement for the fighter plane, shown here one hour after taking my driving test in it, in the summer of'58.
Not only would it do 55 mph, it would also do 55mpg and was remarkably good to drive, being of BMW parentage. I understand the later ones , built in a railway shed in Brighton, were nothing like so nice to drive.
One epic journey in this machine is worthy of note. I had a great friend, and excellent tennis player, who wanted to compete in the Lancashire under 18 tournament. Only problem was, he had a girlfriend who also wanted to play, and so did I !
Accordingly the north face of the eiger was attempted, driver, and to his right (it was left hand drive) his lady, and to her right one great chum, with his lady on lap. Quite a journey.
