The Elite, in most people's book one of the ten most beautiful cars of all time, was designed by an amateur stylist, Peter Kirwan-Taylor. Colin Chapman had seen his efforts with a streamlined version of his boxy Mk 6 , and had been impressed.
First conceived in 1957, it was not until 1959 that the Elite finallly made it to Le Mans. winning its class in the hands of Lumsden and Riley.
Continuing an amazingly consistent run at Le Sarthe, Team Elite won its class every year from 1959 to 1964.
This car shown is from 1963, winning its class, as ever, with Wagstaff and Fergusson on board, at 94.0 mph, and covering 2222.7 miles in the 24 hours.
