Tom Cole, a wealthy Anglo-American, was the first ever customer for Sydney Allard's "American car built in South London". Buoyed up by his success with the car in the USA, he ordered another one and asked its creator to join him at Le Mans.
All sorts of problems afflicted them in the practice sessions, and after very little sleep they approached the race with some trepidation. At the 13 hour mark the gearbox played up, and only top gear was available for the last 11 hours of the race.
In view of this 3rd place at 87.74 mph can be considered a huge triumph.
