The defending champions, Hill and Gendebien, were not too thrilled at the choice of machine provided for them for the 1962 race. This was the change over era, from front to mid engined , and the previous year had seen the first Ferrari with mid-engine layout. It could be said they were alloted an obsolete machine.
Phil Hill started every race for 13 consecutive years, and every time he finished he won (3).
Olivier Gendebien started every race from 1955 to 1962 , gaining 4 wins, a 3rd and a 5th place.
This most successful pairing duly obliged with a win this year, at 115.24 mph.
